Privacy Policy

MarkLayer is a browser extension for inspecting and annotating websites.

What we collect

Nothing is sent to us or to any third party. MarkLayer has no servers, no accounts, and no analytics or trackers.

The only data MarkLayer creates is the content you make — your comments, text/style edits, drawings, saved sessions, and small UI preferences (such as your display name and whether you've seen the welcome hint). This is stored locally in your browser using the standard extension storage API (chrome.storage.local).

How your data is used

• It is used solely to display your annotations back to you and to re-apply them when you revisit a site or import a MarkLayer file.
• It stays on your device. When you export, a JSON file is saved to your computer by your own action; sharing that file is entirely up to you.

What we do NOT do

• We do not sell or transfer your data to third parties.
• We do not use your data for advertising, credit, or any purpose unrelated to the extension's core functionality.
• We do not execute remote code; all extension code ships inside the package.

Permissions

MarkLayer runs on a page only when you click its icon or press its shortcut (on-demand). Broad site access is requested at runtime only when you use “Import & open” for a specific site, so annotations can re-apply as you navigate that site. You can decline.
